Nigerian Highlife Music Legend, Victor Olaiya Is Dead, Aged 89

The popular Highlife singer died today in Lagos

Tributes are expected to be pouring in following Olaiya’s death.

Punch reports his death as follows:

“Highlife music legend, Sir Victor Olaiya, has died at age 89.

“Olaiya died after a brief illness.

“The music legend died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) on Wednesday, February 12.

“His death was confirmed by the Managing Director of Evergreen Music Company Ltd, Bimbo Esho.”

According to Wikipedia:

“Victor Abimbola Olaiya, also known as Dr Victor Olaiya, is a Nigerian trumpeter who plays in the highlife style. Though extremely famous in Nigeria during the 1950s and early 1960s, Olaiya received little recognition outside his native country.

“Olaiya was born on December 31, 1930.”
